scottshoemaker
Phase 1 sponge painting and rust application complete. Bonus tip: mix baking soda in your craft paint to get that dryer, chunky texture. The more you add, the coarser it gets. For surfaces that are smooth, a paste consistency will yield nice rust blooms Next up is shading

scottshoemaker
Airbrushed the shading using inks, then airbrushed the pieces with burnt umber w&n watercolor to baseline all visible surfaces an ugly brown. The watercolors are semitransparent, so it pulls all the colors together. Some areas will be left alone, others will get damp sponged to remove the watercolors for color reveal. it a bit orange in the pic, but now the pieces are covered in a nice layer of grime

scottshoemaker
Burnt Umber watercolor airbrushed on the entire piece in multiple layers Reductive sponging to remove watercolor to reveal color underneath, focusing on natural areas of wear. Seal with matte varnish
