InfestedKerrigan
So I ended up getting the Core Set, X-Wing booster, TIE Fighter booster and Slave I booster. :) I want to get a second Core Set, a second X-Wing booster and a TIE Advance x1 booster, next. Burk
the tie advanced is not that good and is rarely played. otherwise you are golden for a starting core. i love interceptors and bombers. completely different styles on both, but enjoyable. InfestedKerrigan
Honestly, the only drawing power of the Advanced X1 is Vader, or more specifically, doing Black Squadron. :) I can't see getting more than 1 of them, honestly. I'm looking forward to Imperial Aces and hoping for a Rogue Squadron set done similarly. The Interceptor Pilots in the X-Wing books were always great. :)
DisruptiveConduct
I think you can have a decent list with the slave I and the three tie fighters. If that is still shy of 100 points then adding a TIE Interceptor would be a good buy. The second core set will definitely get you to 100 with Imperials with a ton of options. Burk
you are way low with a single slave and 3 ties. the lowest values of those would put you at 69 points. 33 slave, 12 academy pilots. could scale up but would still be low unless you had alot of upgrades. with imperials, more ships is "usually" better. however, for a starter to learn the rules (which will take about 20 minutes, yes its that simple) you are good to go. I dont know where your located, but if ever in PDX area, I would give ya a game.
Marcalla
Its also Good to remember that certain pilot/ship upgrades only come in certain packs. IE the Tie Advanced will have 1-3 upgrades that you won't get anywhere else (clever FFG, clever)
Dark Trainer
Would this be enough to get started 2 - Core sets (2 Xwings, 4 Ties) 2 - A-Wings (like the idea of tie mobility on Rebel side) 2 - Interceptors (same as above, but like having an X-wing) 1 - B Wing (love those ships) Would that be worthy? I liked Interceptors and B-wings in the fluff, but are they strong? I really don't want to buy a ton of stuff, but without just gorging them on equipment, is that 100pts worth for both sides and reasonable comp? Also, since I'm not getting actual Tie and Xwing blisters, which pilots do I miss out on? It matter?
Burk
they are good starting points. you wont have the x-wing upgrade cards,b ut you will have enbough points to play.
InfestedKerrigan
@DT http://fabpsb.free.fr/mindex.php#etiquette Free Squadron Builder. You put in what sets and how many you have, set the points level you are building to and then add pilots from that. It's pretty nifty. I don't know how accurate it is, perhaps an experienced player can let us know, but I've enjoyed toying with it. Burk, I'm living in Kentucky. I plan on coming back to PacNW in 2015, I believe. Thanks for the offer, though!
Last_Bullet
http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build Thats the builder we all use up North of Seattle. This is a great game and the buy in is less than the nid army I am building currently. And I have doubles of a lot of ships!
Dark Trainer
So I bought in, after talking with Bryan and such. I ended up with the following, bought at www.coolstuffinc.com: 2 Core sets 1 X wing 1 Tie Fighter 2 Interceptors 2 B Wings That will give me 3 X-wings, 2 B-wings, 5 ties, and 2 interceptors. Since these will likely go against each other I think that sounds like a reasonable list. Supposedly that should give me 100pt lists? I was advised against the a-wings. I can add more later, but $113 that is cheap...retail too! What are the list generators for? Help with strong combos or just to make some in general? Are they reliable, or should I find my own? Also, do you think these 2 lists are balanced against each other well enough for games with my nephews, etc.
Burk
A-wings are awesome. I love them.
Marcalla
I just picked up an A wing. I think they really help fill that niche of points at the end of the build for the rebels.
Munkie
A-Wings are fun as little antagonists. They aren't gonna be bringing many ships down but they're damn dodgy and imps generally seem to have a hard time making their low-dice shots stick to the wee bastards. They're good for finishing off wounded ships and distracting your opponent.
Dark Trainer
So I just learned something else about initial buy in. Some ships include upgrades that others do not. I wanted push the limit, so I had to buy an a-wing to get it for example. Not a big deal, but as you get into the game more, you may find other things like shield upgrades (falcon and slave I) and such might be useful. Not a deal breaker, but just for those looking to fine tune lists.

Not a deal breaker, but just for those looking to fine tune lists. I've mentioned this in several threads, as have others. The downside is you have to buy 1 of all the ships (even tie and x wings that come in the box) to get the upgrades. But the upside is that you know exactly what you're getting as opposed to many other games in this genra that are "collectible" Imagine buying 10+ A wings to get the rare push the limit. Or 5-10 falcons to get the ultra-rare falcon title card. Or how about buying X-wing blind boosters and ending up with 30 tie fighters and no x wings or vice versa.
Aldroud
So, random purchase at the local game store today. I have heard of X-Wing before, never seen it. Very attractive looking box and reasonably priced. Got my tax refund, so why not? Got the starter set, 1 X-Wing, and 1 Advanced TIE. Looking forward to teaching boy child to play.
InfestedKerrigan
I am currently at the Starter, an additional X-wing and TIEln and Slave 1. I would like to get Imperial Aces next, I believe.
Steel Angel
I got the starter, b-wing, x-wing,tie advanced, Hwk, and a bomber $75 dollars. ebay-warstore. now need to find a group to come over and play lol. So I just learned something else about initial buy in. Some ships include upgrades that others do not. I wanted push the limit, so I had to buy an a-wing to get it for example. Easy as pie.....Hmmm pie
Dark Trainer
I don't find most of the 'good cards' people want to trade. Some you can trade I suppose, but those I tend to have multiples of anyway. For example the Y-wing astromech, A-wing push the limit, Lamda advanced sensors, etc. People tend to hang onto those.
